Introduction to Sports Writing!!!!

1.  Brainstorm and write down every word you can think of that includes

"sports
."

2.  Who is your favorite athlete and discuss why.

3.  Create your own extreme sport...  Use the 5 w's and the h to explain

this new sport.

Sports Vocabulary:  Need to Know!!
1
. balance:  fairly presenting accurate info. about all parties involved
2. beat:  whatever sport the reporter is writing about..or a specific team
3. collective nouns:  nouns that signify groups of people (team, crew, squad)
4. jargon:  terms that a team or group understand, but outsiders may not (hat trick, triple double)
5.  score:  numerical record
6. score box:  collection of scores or team's records to date
7. sports editor:  helps develop sports coverage and then edits for accuracy
8. sportsmanship:  conduct & attitude both on and off the field
9. "slanguage":  expressions stemming from jargon (pigskin=football)
10. pregame story: advance story before the event --background info. on both teams
11. game story:  play-by-play action
12. postgame story:  Follow-up story ( almost always featurized)

**Assignment:  You will  find 5 of the above in the sports section of a newspaper, cut them out and label.  They can be stapled together when turned in.  Nothing off of the internet will be accepted.
Due:  Friday, April 21        Test grade!!
