Medieval Romance Characteristics:

A medieval romance is a tale of high adventure, usually depicting a hero-knight.  It can be a religious crusade, a conquest for the knight's lord, the rescue of a captive lady, a response to a challenge, or any combination of these.

Hero-Knight Characteristics:
1. Birth is shrouded in mystery
2. Taken away from true home in ignorance of his real parents.
3. For a time, his true Identity is unknown
4. He claims his right after meeting an extraordinary challenge
5. Triumph benefits group or nation


Characterized by:
1. Idealizes chivalry
2. People look up to the knight for lofty ideals, noble deeds, and superhuman strength
3. Courtly love
4. Setting is usually imaginary and vague
5. Supernatural events cause mystery or suspense
6. Uses concealed pr disguised identity
7. Often repetition of the number "3" (or multilples of 3)
