Nonfiction Parallels: Students will read a contemporary memoir, narative nonfiction, or nonfiction title:
1. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
2. The Life of Pi by Yann Martel
3. Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt
Novel Assignment and Research Paper:

Students will be required to read one of the novels listed above as an out-of-
class assignment, in lieu of the standard novel that all English 12 classes
read as part of the 12th grade curriculum. Students will need to purchase The
Kite Runner or Angela's Ashes if they choose, or they may check out a copy of
The Life of Pi in class. Before reading either The Kite Runner or Angela's
Ashes, a parental release form must be signed by your parents/guardians. We
will complete some in-class activities with each of the novels; however,
students will be responsible for reading on their own. Students must have a
copy of the novel by Monday, October 10 and will be tested on their novel on Monday, November 7.
While reading the novel, students may find an overarching theme they might like to use for their
research paper, which is due on Friday, November 18. If not, there will be several opportunities through in-
class nonfiction discussions, activities, and readings to find a theme in which to research. Themes can be
health related and/or have some relation to a particular British time period, that perhaps is still seen within
society today.
The Proposal: Each student will be required to come up with a researchable theme
by Wednesday, October 26. These themes must be approved by me in class. ****
