The Romantic Rebellion: 1798-1832

"The Quest for Truth and Beauty."  In the late eighteenth century, English society

underwent great political, economic, and social changes.  The previous notions of faith and

reason, order and tradition, which had dominated England for more than a century, was

replaced by new ways of thinking, feeling, and responding to change.

**What does "Romantic" mean?

Picture
Romantic writing is not necessarily about love.  The "Romance" genre

allowed poets of the time to explore new, more psychological and

mysterious aspects of nature.  the term "Romantic," as it relates to British

writers, has three relevant and useful meanings:

1. A Child's Sense of Wonder:  shows the freshness and wonder of a child's perspective of the world

2. Social Idealism:  questioning tradition and authority to imagine a better way to live

3.  Adaptation to Change:  the acceptance of change in society

The Lure of the Gothic:
Literature of the Romantic period is filled with examples of the eerie and supernatural, such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner.  "Gothic" stories were intended to make the readers' blood run cold and was generally set in gloomy medieval castles.

Romanticism:  A Test Grade:)
