Photography in Journalism: Photojournalism

Picture

Journalistic photos are meant to tell their own story or to add substance to a

story that has already been written!!  Stories can be communicated by capturing

a specific moment in time.  Photographers should look for action, reaction, and

emotion!!!

Action:
a good photographer looks for the moment an event takes place

Reaction:  Some of the best photos come after something has happened... what happens next

Emotion:  Emotional photos often tell their own story

Photo Essays:
**a story told through photos and/or captions.  It's a good idea to make one of the photos large as the dominant element  on the page and use other photos for shape and variety.

Ethics of Photography:  it is believed that credibility is a journalist's asset.  It is wrong to alter the contect of a photo in any way that may deceive the public.  Guidelines for fair and accurate reporting should be the criteria for judging what may be done electtonically to a photograph

Cropping:

Sometimes cropping a picture can improve it dramatically. Cropping can be used to:

1. Enlarge the main subject

2. Eliminate things that distract attention from the subject

3. Change the format to fit a standard frame size

GOOD CROP:

1.  Adds impact:  finds the focal point of of a photo and enhances it..making the

centering powerful

2. Eliminates what's unnecessary:  sky, ground, extra people

BAD CROP:

1. Amputates body parts:  enough said

2. Forces the image into an awkward shape

3. Changes the meaning of the photo
